Bendele Organic Poultry Farm is a roughly 70 hectare certified organic family farm at Kilkivan, west of Gympie in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Run by Sarah and Fred Sterns, it is first and foremost a poultry farm, raising free-range and organic chickens, ducks and turkeys on open pasture. The chicken is ACO Certified Organic, grown free from chemical pesticides, growth promotants, antibiotics, herbicides and genetic modification, and the birds are also certified free range by Free Range Egg and Poultry Australia (FREPA).
What sets the farm apart is how the birds are raised. Chickens are hand-reared and then forage freely, with an area equivalent of about 25 square metres of pasture each, and they grow for around 80 days. That is more than double the as-little-as 35 days common for commercial chicken, which gives the meat its flavour and texture. Bendele poultry is sold through select butchers, delis and farmers markets around Queensland, including organic meat retailers on the Sunshine Coast.
